For years, psychedelic mushrooms have been a favourite among aficionados for their supposed mind-sharpening qualities. But now, stores that sell them for recreational use and microdosing — the low-dose self-medication of mushrooms — are popping up across the country. These illegal dispensaries challenge existing rules that prohibit the sale, growth and possession of the fungi without a license or special exemption from Health Canada.
Mushrooms Online Canada Shetty reports on the opening day of one such store in Kitchener. Watching the tiny shop fill up with returning customers on its first day was a sign of how eager people are to buy psilocybin-laced mushrooms, also known as “magic mushrooms” and “psychedelic mushrooms.” The store is one of many such operations to open in recent years across the country. They are called mushroom shops or psilocybin dispensaries and they sell the drug on its own by weight and in various strains as well as in edibles such as gummies and chocolate.

While the stores are thriving, they are risky business. They are subject to raids and police searches that could lead to fines or even criminal charges for the owners. Some, like the FunGuyz chain in Montreal, have already faced this. But while the shops may be vulnerable to enforcement, it seems that more are opening than closing. And that may reflect the reality that police forces are stretched thin enforcing laws against drugs such as fentanyl and heroin, which are killing Canadians at a record pace.
